Private Kabuki Workshop

To see "Kabuki", Japanese traditional performance, you would normally need to go to a big theater and see actors from a certain distance, in many cases small. In this program, an actual Kabuki actor comes to a private venue we arrange, and lectures you about Kabuki followed by a private show.
First part of this program begins by the short lecture about Kabuki. Questions are very welcome. Then the actor will do elaborate make-up which is very unique to Japanese Kabuki. You usually cannot see this make-up process but in this program you can see up close how they do their make-up. If you are interested, you are able to do the same make-up on your face.
After approx. 1 hour workshop, cocktails/tea break is held and during this time, Kabuki actor dresses up and prepares for performance. After the 30 min break, 10-15 min Kabuki show begins. If the workshop is in lunch/dinner time, it is possible to arrange meal and after the main dish are served, Kabuki show begins to evoke the mood. Single actor lectures you and show special performance only for your group, therefore being a very exclusive program for your VIPs.

Mystical Autumn Evening at the Byodoin Temple, Kyoto
Mystical Autumn Evening at the Byodoin Temple, Kyoto

(Tour Date: Mon, Nov 27, 2017)

‹ Introduction of the tour ›

Kyoto, being one of the top places in the world to witness autumn foliage, it is not unusual to see temples and shrines overcrowded with tourists. JTB Royal Road Ginza has specially prepared a private evening at one of the most renowned temples in Kyoto, Byodoin. With only JTB guests at the premises, the participants are able to peacefully appreciate the beautiful vivid leaves framing the temple grounds along with yet another specially prepared performance by an outstanding Japanese harpist. The timbre of traditional Japanese harp music will illuminate the scene even more. Participants also have access to the temple museum exhibiting many important religious and historical artifacts related to the temple.
For this exclusive visitation to Byodoin, we will arrange private guides and chartered vehicles for each party.

‹ ByodoinTemple is... ›

Dating back to 998 AD during the Heian period, like most Japanese temples, Byodoin started off as a private residence. The structure was converted into a temple by a member of the Fujiwara clan in 1052. Then the following year, the renowned Phoenix Hall was built to house the Amida Buddha image. The temple complex back then was larger than the present day, with pond's beach stretching up to the Uji River and with mountains on the opposite side of the river as a background. The entire panoramic scene was a representation of the Buddhist Pure Land on earth. unfortunately, most of the buildings were burned down during the civil war in 14th century. Today, the Phoenix Hall is virtually all that remains and Byodoin is one of the few examples of Heian temple architecture left in Japan. The temple is famous nationwide for the Phoenix Hall’s symmetrical beauty, also illustrated on the back of a 10 yen coin. In December 1994, UNESCO listed the building as a World Heritage Site.

‹ Schedule of the day ›

Arrangement of private guides and chartered vehicles is crucial for this exclusive visitation to Byodoin. We can take you on an afternoon tour around the main highlights of Kyoto (two or three sites) and end the day with this exclusive program at Byodoin. Byodoin will close to the public at 17:30. Then the JTB Royal Road Ginza guests' will be greeted for their special admission beginning around 18:00-19:00.
